Austin has one of the fastest-growing populations of older adults in the U.S. While our overall population grew nearly 40% between 2000 and 2010, the number of us over the age of 55 grew by 80% (U.S. Census, 2010). This growth will require expansion of services for older adults and new technology innovations in housing, transportation, health advancements and assistance with care.
The 3rd Annual ATX Aging & Innovation Summit, coming up on Wednesday, October 23rd, will feature regional and national perspectives exploring themes of equity, diversity and intergenerational community engagement with a goal of expanding aging innovation – and actual implementation – in Austin. The audience will include entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, city leaders, business leaders, nonprofits, older adults, caregivers and individuals interested in the aging conversation.
Program Highlights
The keynote speaker is Jewel Mullen, M.D., M.P.H., M.P.A., the associate dean for health equity at Dell Medical School, as well as an associate professor in the school’s population health and internal medicine departments. She also serves as Director of Health Equity at Ascension Seton to help meet health equity goals across its system. Her presentation, titled, "Assuring Optimal Health for All Older Adults in Austin," will kick off the event.
“Welcome to Austin, Innovators” will feature Dan Bullock, beloved Austin writer, speaker, leadership consultant and founder of The Mosey Project, who will moderate a panel of representatives from aging-related businesses currently launching in Austin. The panel will discuss ways these newcomers are engaging with the community, working to improve the future of aging in Austin and ensuring equity/diversity as they launch their products/services. Panelists: Edward Arsenault, Executive Director, ReServe, Inc.; Jennifer Hammer, Director of Strategic Partnerships, Silvernest; and Austin Harkness, Executive Vice President of Operations, Honor.
The closing session will share information about the Austin City:One Challenge, a public-private collaboration aimed at crowdsourcing ideas that will transform transportation in and around the east side of Austin. Hannah Barron, Smart Mobility Community Engagement Manager, Austin Transportation Department | Smart Mobility and Katie Herbek, Regional Manager for City Solutions, Ford Motor Company will outline project goals and talk about why older adults are vital to project success.
Afternoon break-out sessions will include tracks for innovators, business leaders and consumers (older adults). Presentations will cover the impact of women entrepreneurs in the aging space, new ideas in housing design, information and trends related to CBD, results of the Aging Services Council's recent five-county needs assessment of individuals over age 60, emergency preparedness for those aging in place – and more.
